Prior to my stroke at age 13, I loved to play video games. It’s a great way to spend time with friends and enjoy the thrill of friendly competition. Since my stroke, I have been unable to move my left arm and one of the things I really missed was playing video games. I needed to figure out a way to get back to gaming and was determined to make it work. Gaming controllers are designed for two hands so there were many challenges and I tried several different techniques and controllers before I figured out what worked best for me. I finally found something that worked for me after I purchased a special gaming mouse that can be adapted.
The mouse has three different interchangeable attachments: 2 buttons, 7 buttons, or 12 buttons. I started with the 2 button mouse attachment but I quickly noticed that pretty much every PC game needs more than 2 buttons, especially if you are only using the mouse when you play. When I switched to the 7 button mouse, I noticed that it was much easier to play. Do NOT just go straight into the 12 button attachment expecting to do well; it takes time and practice to get used to all of the buttons. Each button is specifically set for each game that I play, allowing me a wide array of video game choices. I mostly play shooter games like Apex Legends, CSGO, or Valorant. I program each of the games buttons a little differently, but the basic movement in each game stays the same.

Hi, speaking of how hard it is to play video games, also online, I recorded a video gameplay where I tried to play a one-handed shooter.
I used one of these programs to record my screen. I never thought it would be so hard to play with one hand, even though I used all the tips from this blog.
Since I have never played video games, never thought about how hard it would be with one hand! You have certainly found new ways to do things, Andrew! So proud of you.
